Most people have the ability to see three dimensions..height, width and depth. Some of us are lucky enough to discern more, but few of us have the ability to see all the dimenssions Al Hawkins sees; the textures, the drama of light, the subtle nuances.. the dreams.. because few of us have the ability to see with the blended vision of our eyes and our souls.

The best explanation for this ability, is that Al has always lived within a world of contrasts. From the cross-generational influences of his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents; from the diverse lifestyles of his birthplace and early schooling in Kansas City, Missouri and summers spent in rural Eufala, Oklahoma; to the consummate educations of Drake University.. under the tutelage of German artist Karl Mattern; and the mentoring of Chicago artist Calvin Jones and years of working as an art director / creative director in various advertising agencies, Al's work reflects all perspectives at once. It is a blend of sometimes opposing forces merging to co-exist within a single image; the introspection of an every woman, the quiet energy of an evening out.

Al captures the dimensions of ordinary moments, the unseen movement of emotion.. the soul..and invites us to see our world... through his eyes.
